Late Night Cooking for Willie
April 12, 2008 by Black Coffee & Bourbon
I feed Willie before I go to bed every night. He gets 2 cups of dog food and I sit with him on the back patio as he happily munches away. I pet his head and he looks at me and wolfs down his food. The entire process takes about 2 minutes and then I go back inside to finish up other things.
Tonight I opened up the kitchen pantry door and noticed the bag of dog food was gone. The three pooches had finished it this morning and I had forgotten to pick up another bag. That was the only thing I had told myslef to remember to do and I blew it. Since it was 10:00 p.m. everything in Monticello was closed. The Burger King was turning its lights off, I knew the Winn Dixie crew had left for the night and there was no other place in town to buy dog food. I felt like the worst pet owner ever.
Letting Willie starve all night was not an option so I opened the fridge to see if I had any suitable Willie leftovers. On the bottom shelf was the 2 week old goulash that I need to toss tomorrow, and a pot of fresh sauce. Neither of these was deemed suitable for Willie B. I continued to look through the cabinets and eventually decided to scramble him some eggs and add in some brown rice.
Jackson watched intently as I scrambled the eggs. When I scrable eggs for myself they come out horrible. At 11:00 p.m. the eggs I scrambled for Willie were nice and fluffy. I let Jackson sample some and then went outside to feed Willie. I poured the eggs and rice into his bowl and he looked at me as if to say “What is this? Where is my dog food?” I took a piece of scrambled egg out of the bowl and blew on it since it was a little warm. Unlike Jackson and Molly who devour eggs, Willie carefully sniffed it, licked it once and let it fall onto the ground.
Eventually he summoned the courage to conduct a further investigation of what I had offered him in his bowl. He ended up eating the majority of the eggs and a good bit of the rice. First thing tomorrow I will head down to Winn Dixie to buy the dogs a large bag of dog food.
