New Music Thursday

2008 May 29

After hearing Blue Highway in concert at the Southern Music Rising I have been listening to Sirius Channel 65 more often and decided to download a few songs off of iTunes.  I bought Crooked Still’s latest a week ago and tonight I ended up downloading three songs from three differnt artist that I have heard over the past week.

The first was a track by Tony Trischka off of his Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular record called The Crow.   I first heard this song this week while driving to Panama City for a deposition and could not stop listening to it.  It is an upbeat instrumental with some good picking.  The video above is Tony Trischka, Steve Martin and Bela Fleck performing this song on the Late Show.  It rocks!

The second song was Midnight Train to Mephis by the SteelDrives.  I heard them play it on the Grand Ole Opry a couple of weeks ago and really liked how they sounded.  The lead singer has a soulful voice that kind of reminds me of the guy from Blues Traveler.  This song would be perfect to listen to on the patio with a cold beer.

The final song was Tallahassee by Cherryholmes.  I have heard quite a bit of Cherryholmes’ latest album on Sirius, but this song was off their first record.  I was intrigued by the snippet I heard on iTunes and decided to give it a try.  Like The Crow, this song is an intrumental but instead of the banjo being front and center the fiddle is featured.  This song is quite good.

Listening to these three song makes me look forward to the 2nd Annual Southern Music Rising next year.  It also makes me want to pack up the truck and head up to North Carolina for a weekend in the mountains.
