Florida State vs. Samford

September 4, 2010

FSU's first touchdown of 2010

Today was the first Florida State game of the 2010 season and as a reward for letting the girls have a weekend in Savannah, Georgia Courtney got two tickets for her husband Seth and me. After taking a shower throwing on my FSU shirt and grabbing some refreshments on the way into town I picked up Seth. The tickets came with shuttle passes which boarded from the TLC Double C. We found a parking spot near the law school and within minutes were outside of Doak S. Campbell Stadium.

The opponet today was Samford University, an FCS school from Birmingham, Alabama. They are the school where Bobby Bowden played and later had his first “big” coaching job. I assume they were chosen to open the 2010 season to give Bobby, if he had stuck around, a fitting kick-off to his last season. As it turned out Bobby was shown the door at the end of 2009 and that plan went up in smoke. However, it turns out Jimbo Fisher also has some history with Samford as they were the first school he beat in college, the last school he played for in college and the place he served as an assistant coach.

The personal connections of the Bowdens and Fisher aside, I was just excited that the 2010 college football season was here. The crowd headed to the stadium had some excitement to it but was not as large as it would have been if we were playing a more impressive opponent.  I saw a few people wearing Samford Bulldog gear and smiled at them knowing that within minutes their team would be pushed up and down the field like a Pop Warner squad.

We met up with my friend Kirk near the baseball stadium for some beverages and some ESPN on their television.  Everyone wanted to make sure we saw the Osceola and Renegarde’s first procession of the season so we headed into the game at 11:30 a.m. It was cloudy but at kickoff approached the sky opened up and bathed Bobby Bowden Field in very warm North Florida sunlight.

Our seats were pretty good and as expected Florida State dominated Samford. Seth and I drank a lot of water during the game since it was in the mid-90’s. By the 3rd quarter he had enough and wanted to leave. I was feeling kind of lightheaded myself and joined him on the way to the exits.  I listened to the rest of the game on the radio from the comfort of my air conditioned car. The final score was Florida State 59 Samford 6.

Looks like that was a good game. Also, it appears that the game yesterday with Wake Forest was a shutout (31-0) so perhaps Fisher can pull this off.
