Laboring on Labor Day

September 6, 2010

Becks has been itching to spruce up the kitchen and asked if I wanted to help her paint the cabinets.  She wanted to paint them the same color as the trim in the rest of the house, and upon digging in the paint cabinet out in the garage found an almost full gallon of white semi-gloss. Our Labor Day plans were now in place.

This morning after breakfast we set to work.  I took the old ugly yellow brass with light pine accent hardware off the cabinets while Becks cleaned them.  The plan was for me to use a brush to paint the trim and small areas while Becks would use a roller to paint the larger ones. Things were going fairly smoothly until the kids woke up from their naps and required a changing, food and attention.  Knowing that if Mason was in the kitchen his little hands would quickly find the paint bucket we decided to take turns parenting and painting. One of us stayed in the livingroom or outside while the other painted as much as they could.

By later afternoon the cabinets were finished and I thought our project was complete. I was wrong. Becks insisted that we also paint the front portion of the kitchen that we had neglected since we moved in. She set to painting and by 7:00 p.m. the entire kitchen had a new coat of paint and looked wonderful. Tomorrow we will make sure that we covered the doors completely and then we can start putting the new hardware on the cabinets.  I cannot wait to see what it looks like once all the pieces are in place!
