Becks is Back in the Classroom

October 15, 2010

Becks was a teacher, always wanted to be a teacher, and finally is one again. This was her first week back in the classroom is a little under a decade.  The route she took to get from Yulee Middle School to Chaires High School was an interesting one that included law school, marriage, two children and three career changes.

Since we graduated from law school Becks has wanted to go back to teaching.  It was something she was passionate about, and you could hear it in her voice when she told stories about her former students, how they kept in touch with her, and the great things kids from the middle-of-nowhere Georgia did after being inspired by a fiery little blonde.

She has called me over to the computer on countless occasions to have me read an email, or a comment from a former student who just wanted to tell her thank you for being their teacher.  She made a real impact on kids’ lives and helped them believe in themselves.  Those kinds of teachers are rare, and I still remember the ones I had who had that same impact on me as I went through school.

While on maternity leave she tried to find a teaching job and applied to various schools in our area. Some granted her an interview, while others did not even give her application a second glance.  In the process she visited some of the worst performing schools in the State of Florida.  She thought that God had a plan for her, but those jobs did not pan out. In the end she applied for a job at the best high school in Tallahassee and got the job.

Becks started on Monday and for the past week has been getting up at 5:15 a.m. to be in front of a room full of high school students by 7:30 a.m.  By the end of the day she is tired, but she comes home and makes lesson plans, thinks up projects and prepares for the next day’s classes. I have never seen her this happy about her job and I am thrilled that she never gave up on her dream.  I am very proud of my wife and know that the students at Chiles are lucky to have such a wonderful teacher in their classroom.

    That’s great!
My wife a teacher until our first was born.
    She taught elementary students.
She’s managed to stay in touch with a few.. through college.

Last winter my wife was contacted to work for a teacher going out on Maternity leave.

Now she’s counting down the days until that teacher comes back.

Much has changed down here in the 10 years she took off.
Hopefully the joy your wife feels now, lasts.
Good, dedicated teachers are a rare breed.
As you mention, you really remember the good ones.
