A Double Dose of UNH

December 10, 2010

I was planning on going to Victorian Christmas with Becks and the kids tonight until I got a call at work.  Becks proposed heading to Thomasville with her mom and Charlotte for a girls night while I stayed home and watched the kids.  Since this also meant I could watch UNH hockey and football the change in plans was fine with me.

Jules went to bed around 7:30 p.m. just at the ‘Cats were facing the Black Bears of Maine in ice hockey.  The game was on the road at Alfond Arena and the ‘Cats got off to a fast start taking a 1-0 lead in the 1st.  Maine netted the equalizer early in the 2nd period and when the crowd went wild Mason clapped and said “yay!” He doesn’t realize we are a UNH family.

At 8:00 p.m. UNH football kicked off against Delaware on ESPN2.  The ‘Cats were trying to advance to the semifinals of the FCS playoffs for the first time in history.  For some reason Toman started in place of Decker and while he moved the ball good at time, the ‘Cats only scored 3 points in the first half and were tied with UD at the end of 30.

The rest of the night I flipped back and forth between the hockey and football games. Maine took a 3-1 lead in the hockey game and things were looking bleak for the ‘Cats.  However, they came alive in the 3rd and scored the game tying goal with 18.3 seconds left! I was pumped and Mason gave me knuckles when the scored.  In OT UNH scored the game winner and left a stunned Alfond Arena with a 4-3 win.  Beating Maine is always a good thing and I was happy I was able to watch my ‘Cats stick it to our rival.

Sadly the football game did not turn out as well.  UNH could not get anything going against the Bluehens and the ‘Cats made mistakes at the worst times to keep UD’s drives alive.  UD took advantage of the mistakes and penalties and in the end won 16-3.  It was a disappointing end to the season, but UNH had a lot to be proud of making the playoffs for the 7th straight season.

It was a really great night hanging out with the kids and it was a very special treat to be able to watch two UNH games in one evening!
