Decent Q at Jim ‘N Nicks Bar-B-Que

December 20, 2010

On my way back to Tallahassee I passed through Niceville.  I was hungry and decided to try Jim ‘N Nicks Bar-B-Q .  The location is a drive through only and the building was well-kept. The signage out front had an old-time feel to it that invited me to check out the little restaurant.

Driving to the menu I noticed several large piles of wood and the smell of oak smoke in the air.   This was a promising discovery as unless it is slow cooked over wood coals it really cannot be called BBQ.

After looking over the choices I decided to get the pork Bar-B-Que sandwich combo with fries and a coke.  The total came to a little over $8 with tax.  While waiting for my order to be filled I chatted with the drive through window girl and asked her if Jim ‘N Nicks was a chain or a local restaurant.  I had no clue since I had never seen one before.  She informed me it was a chain out of North Carolina with two locations in Florida, the second being in Destin.

While looking over a brochure my order was ready.  Driving out I grabbed a fry. It had the potato skin still on, was crunchy and was well seasoned.  I happily munched on the fries and the gigantic coke as I made my way back towards I-10.

I was worried about eating the pork sandwich since I had a white dress shirt on and tend to be a slob.  Thankfully traffic came to a standstill due to construction and I had a chance to eat my sandwich while not in motion.  The bun was nice and fresh and placed on it were large chunks of pork doused with a decent amount of sauce.  The pork was moist with a slight smokey flavor.  The sauce was a nice mix of sweet and tangy.  It was a decent pork sandwich.

Overall, Jim ‘N Nicks Bar-B-Que was pretty good.  I really loved their fries but wish that the pork sandwich had more of that wonderful smoke flavor I smelled while waiting at the drive through.
