Happy New Year!

Sweet potato coma

Happy New Year! I watched the ball drop last night in Times Square and after saying hello to 2011 promptly went to bed.  I was woken up around 4:00 a.m. by Miss Julia, our resident party girl.  She sucked down a 4 ounce bottle and drifted back to sleep.

Following a few more hours of sleep and a cup of coffee I started cooking.  The traditional Southern New Year’s dinner consists of collard greens, black-eyed peas, corn bread and a fat back.  I sub out a spiral cut ham for the fat back.

After some chopping, washing and soaking I had a nice large pot of collards simmering on the stove, black-eyed peas in the crock pot and a ham in the oven.  The house smelled really good as all three cooked during the morning.  Steve and Charlotte came over around noon and we watched football until it was time to eat.  Everything turned out really well.

Miss Julia went down for a nap and Mason wanted to play on his swing set.  He stood at the back door saying “Outside! Outside!” He ran out the back door and towards the steps to climb up the slide.  Becky and I helped him and he laughed as he slid down.  We repeated this about 10 or 11 times until he decided it was time to swing.

I made sure hit little butt was on the swing all the way and then started pushing him.  Becky told me I was going to be there for hours and she was right.  If he started to slow down he said “More daddy!” and I obliged.  Our fun outside came to an end when a rain storm hit Monticello.  It was a fun afternoon and I loved playing with him on his swing set.
