Touchdowns, Trains and Planes

May 2, 2011

I finished the dishes and then asked Mason if he wanted to play on his swing set. He replied with an emphatic yes and ran towards the backdoor in his khaki shorts, blue docksiders and red Braves t-shirt.  Walking down the steps he grabbed my hand and together with Sissy on my hip we headed towards the swings.

He swung for awhile watching Jules go back and forth beside him. When he had enough swinging he hopped off and ran to the front yard to find his football.  The ball was not in the large metal wash tub on the porch and he stood there looking around.

“Ball? Ball? Where are you ball?” he asked as he wandered around the front yard.

I realized his ball was inside and we all went in to retrieve it.  When we returned to the front yard Julia entertained herself by sitting in the grass and looking at leaves while Mason and I played catch.  He throws lefty and has a pretty good arm for a 2 year old.  He would toss the ball at me, run towards the fence and then exclaim “touchdown!” I’d roll the ball back towards him and we would repeat the process.

When he was done playing catch we pretended we were trains.  “Choo-choo!” Mason said while walking around in a circle.  He looked at me and said “Come on daddy!” to make sure I too was fully into being a train.  His choo-choo was much better than mine.

Our final game of the night was airplane.  He stretched out his arms and “flew” around the front yard looking up at the sky.  I also had to pretend I was an airplane (to anyone passing by our house who could not see Mason due to the fence and bushes I must have appeared quite eccentric).  It was fun being let into Mason’s imaginary world in our front yard.  I am very happy that he pretends and can entertain himself.  Both his mom and I had good imaginations when we were little and I am happy to see he was also blessed with this gift.

We ended the night with a “bubbles” and some snuggling on the couch.  I love being a dad.
