Brewsday Tuesday: Double Simcoe IPA

August 9, 2011

Name: Double Simcoe IPA

Brewed by: Weyerbacher Brewing Co.

Style/ABV: Double IPA, Imperial IPA / 9.0%

Appearance: Hazy caramel color pour with a huge cream head that wanted to jump over the rim of the glass.

Smell: Large punch of piney hops and biscuit maltiness.

Taste: This one tastes like it smells.  The simcoe hops have zero citrus flavor and assault my taste buds with a pine resin flavor that was not entirely enjoyable.  The bitterness is high with some metallic Tylenol flavoring.  Some malt sweetness and the alcohol is well hidden.

Mouthfeel: Full body with moderate carbonation.

Overall: As I drink new and different beers I can firmly say I prefer citrusy hops over one that taste of pine.  The beer also had a very bitter bordering on medicinal taste.  This is something I would have to be persuaded to pick up again.

Final Grade: C
