Brewsday Tuesday: Pabst Blue Ribbon

September 27, 2011

Florida State football season means tailgating.  While most people opt to bring along a light beer produced by Bud/Millers/Coors I opt for Pabst Blue Ribbon.  During the recent Florida State vs. Oklahoma game a 12-pack of PBR served as my sidekick and good will ambassador.  It is only fitting that it be highlighted on Brewsday Tuesday.

Of course when PBR is mentioned a certain issue must also be addressed, hipsters. Sure it’s the go to beer for people too cool for cool throughout this fine land, but I fell in love with it as a poor law student.  It was offered in the dive bar near our house for $1 a can. It beat the horrible beer that sometimes flowed from their taps and will forever have a special place in my heart and in my fridge.

Name: Pabst Blue Ribbon

Brewed by: Pabst Brewing Company

Style/ABV: American Adjunct Lager / 4.7%

Appearance: Pours a pale yellow with a one finger head that quickly disappears.

Smell: Corn and a hint of earthiness from the hops.

Taste: Light grains, corn with a hint of hop bitterness at the end and a dry finish. It is a very drinkable beer.

Mouthfeel: Light with high carbonation.

Overall: For the price this is one of the best cheap beers on the market, and  I would rank it up there with Narragansett.  Sometimes you need a break from craft beers and on a hot summer’s afternoon this beer hits the spot.

Final Grade: B
