Brewsday Tuesday: Southern Pecan

December 6, 2011

It was my first time in Oxford, Mississippi and we stopped for some lunch at a little restaurant off the square.  It was early May and the Ole Miss students were still in town.  The scenery, both architectural and otherwise was stunning.  While waiting for our lunch to be served I ordered a Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale. Whenever I see that beer I am reminded of that lunch and was happy to see a six pack this past weekend ona shelf in Pine Mountain, Georgia.

Name: Southern Pecan

Brewed by:  Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company

Style/ABV: English Brown Ale / 4.39%

Appearance: Pours a pleasant dark brown color with ruby highlights.  A nice two finger off white head sits on top.  There is minor lacing on the glass as the beer is consumed.

Smell: Malt sweetness with roasted nuttiness from the pecans.  There are some very light hop notes in the background.

Taste: Starts with some bitterness, works into mild nutty sweetness from the pecans and finishes crisply.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with low carbonation.  It is a very smooth beer.

Overall: A very nice and very drinkable brown ale.  The additions of pecans give a Southern twist to one of my favorite styles of beer.  The low ABV make this a very sessionable beer.  I am happy I found it at the store this weekend and would definetly buy it again.

Final Grade: B+
