Brewsday Tuesday: Claymore Scotch Ale

February 14, 2012

Name: Claymore Scotch Ale

Brewed by: Great Divide Brewing Company

Style/ABV: Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy / 7.7%

Appearance: Pours a dark garnet color with a thin 1/2 finger beige colored head which disappears in a minute or so.

Smell: Sweet malts, coffee, raisins, and musty earthiness. Interesting.

Taste: Opens up with sweet caramel notes, works into some coffee bitterness. Finishes with a tangy smokiness and slight hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low carbonation, it has a thick silky feel.

Overall: This a complex and highly drinkable beer that hides its high alcohol content amazingly well.  I really enjoyed the creamy feel of this brew and its combination of sweet and roasted malts.  I could drink this one all night, or until the 7.7% ABV catches up with me.

Final Grade: B+
