Brewsday Tuesday: AleSmith IPA

April 24, 2012

Time to try the second beer my friend Anyaa sent me, AleSmith IPA.  The beer came in a very minimalistic bottle with a bold IPA written on the neck and body of the bottle.  As soon as I popped open the cap I got a whiff of citrus hops and knew I was in for a treat.

Name: AleSmith IPA

Brewed by: AleSmith Brewing Company

Location: San Diego, CA

Style/ABV: American IPA / 7.25%

Appearance: Pours a beautiful deep copper colored orange with a pillowlike two inch off white head.  The head slowly recedes but a 1/4 finger remains all the way to the bottom.  Excellent lacing is present as the beer is consumed.

Smell: Grapefruit and lemon scented hops hit the nose followed by resin and pine undertones.  Initially there was no malt in the nose, but as the beer warmed they became more prevelant and a sweet carmal note presented itself.

Taste: Citrus flavors hit first, followed by a hint of bitterness.  Next up, pine and resin before moving intos some warm carmel.  Closes clean with another punch of pine.  I could drink this all night long.

Mouthfeel: Smooth with medium carbonation.

Overall: My friend is two for two. This beer is a West Coast IPA in its finest form.  Bold hops in the nose, more in the taste, and more in the finish.  AleSmith IPA is an outstanding beer and I am thrilled I got to sample a bottle.

Final Grade: A
