Brewsday Tuesday: Sol

May 29, 2012

This is the third of four varieties of beer included in the Cinco de Mayo mix pack from Winn Dixie.  Clear bottle beer almost always ensures a nice skunky taste.  Let’s see if this sun shines.

Name: Sol

Brewed by: Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, S.A. de C.V.

Location: Monterrey, Mexico

Style/ABV: American Adjunct Lager / 4.5%

Appearance: Pours a clear yellow fizzy yellow with a half  finger white head. The head quickly disappears and there is no lacing.

Smell: Light corn aromas. That is it.

Taste: Sweet corn with a hint of hop bitterness at the end.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and light with some crispness.

Overall: I drank this beer with and without a lime.  If consumed with a lime on a hot North Florida day this is very drinkable brew.  It would also make a good beach beer.  Pretty similar to Corona, but I’d give the nod to Sol based soley on the old school label.

Final Grade: D (without lime) / C+ (with lime somewhere hot and tropical)

So all in all, you’re not a fan of the Mexican beers.

I don’t hate them. I mean, there is a time and a place for this beer. Outside, hot, humid. It works. I also would not turn down a free cold one. 🙂
