Brewsday Tuesday: Pistil

June 12, 2012

The second beer from the Magic Hat mix pack is Pistil. It is billed as “beer brewed with dandelion.” I never thought about putting dandelions in beer, and as I popped the top I hoped it would be drinkable. Cheers!

Name: Pistil

Brewed by: Magic Hat Brewing Company

Location: Burlington, Vermont

Style/ABV: Herbed / Spiced Beer / 4.5%

Appearance: Pours a hazy straw colored yellow with a one finger white head that quickly fades.  No lacing is present.

Smell: Spicy yeast, light malts and something that resembles fresh cut grass.  Must be the dandelion.

Taste: Grassy and floral with some spiciness from the yeast.  A bit bitter at the end with lingering grass/lemon notes.  Interesting.

Mouthfeel: Medium with medium carbonation.  Crisp.

Overall: I was skeptical about drinking a beer brewed with dandelions, but this won me over.  The grass/lemon flavors of the dandelions give this beer something unique and it was very refreshing.  I would not hesitate to grab a 6-pack of this on a hot and humid North Florida day.

Final Grade: B+
