Portabellas Do Not Taste Like Steak

August 6, 2012

Planning a menu while simultaneously filling our cart we began to run out of dinner ideas.  Becky suggested we try a recipe she saw while watching a cooking show, portabella mushroom “burgers.”  We found a pack of two and tossed them into the buggy.

Tonight we decided to fire up the grill and toss the portabella mushrooms on for dinner.  The recipe called for a balsamic vinaigrette to be brushed onto the mushrooms and then allow them to marinate for 15 minutes.  While we were grilling Mason asked, “why are we making mushroom? Where are the hamburgers?” Good question little buddy, I thought as I put the mushrooms onto a plate.  The mushrooms were grilled for 4-5 minutes per side; tossed onto a toasted bun; and topped with  rosemary Greek yogurt, tomatoes, and red onions.  A side of Asian broccoli slaw completed the meal.

Becky and I sampled the mushroom “burgers” and looked at each other.  She did not like them, and after putting on a good face I agreed.  It was not horrible, but would have tasted better sauteed in red wine and next to a ribeye.

Next time try red wine vinegar and a pinch of Kosher salt when you grill them. Also, did you de-gill the mushrooms?

I used balsamic vinegar, EVOO, salt and pepper. Yes, I did de-gill the ‘shrooms. Not horrible, not steak worthy. 🙂

Yeah, it’s definitely not a burger, but I’m surprised nobody liked it!

        You should have made ribs!

It’s not that we didn’t like them, it’s just it wasn’t dinner. I wanted to run down to BK and get some meat when we were done.

Tonight is grilled pork chops. Tasty.

As the husband of a vegetarian, I can verify this finding. Although, the Haybag isn’t one of those delusional veges who thinks this stuff tastes just like the real thing. But in many ways the mushrooms are better than those creepy meat replacers.

I will agree with you that the mushroom is better than the “veggie” burgers. I think I went into it with unrealistic expectations. If I was expecting a mushroom, then they would have been met. A juicy rare burger on the other hand, not so much. 🙂
